Francisco Varela:

Neurophenomenology: naturalized phenomenology

http://www.oikos.org/varela.htm

"Francisco Varela (Santiago, September 7, 1946May 28, 2001 in Paris) was a Chilean biologist and philosopher, who, together with Humberto Maturana, is most well-known for introducing the concept of autopoiesis to biology.

He is also a proponent of the embodied philosophy which claims that human cognition and consciousness can only be understood in terms of the physical structures in which it arises, namely the body, and the environment in which the body interacts. "

"Embodied philosophy (also known as the embodied mind thesis, embodied cognition or the embodied cognition thesis) usually refers to a set of beliefs promoted by George Lakoff and his various co-authors (including Mark Johnson, Mark Turner, and Rafael E. Núñez), which suggest that the mind can only be well understood by taking into account the body and the more primitive underpinnings of the mind. This view is, therefore, opposed to other views of cognition, such as cognitivism, computationalism, connectionism and cartesian dualism."
